Serbia and Montenegro
qualified top of their group ahead of Spain, Belgium and
Bosnia-Herzegovina after winning six and drawing four of their ten
matches. They built their current squad on strong defence, with only 1
goal conceded in their qualifying campaign, i.e against Spain away.
But bulk of their players are ageing and may find this tournament hard
to keep pace with. Nemanja Vidic is suspended for this match.
The Dutch were also
impressive, undefeated in their qualifying group with ten wins from
their 12 matches to finish top. Their squad boasted plenty of young
players but experienced performers like midfielders Phillip Cocu, Mark
van Bommel and striker Ruud van Nistelrooij still remain their key
choices. Rafael van der Vaart, sidelined with an ankle injury during the
warm-up matches for the World Cup, started training again on Wednesday
but is not match-fit to start.
The Dutch like always enter the World Cup finals as one of the much
fancied side with high hopes of success but usually seem to come unstuck
@ the knock-out stage. Drawn in a tough group this time round including
the likes of Argentina, who won narrowly last night against a strong
World Cup debutant, Ivory Coast. Serbia & Montenegro let in only one
goal in their entire qualifying campaign, are no pushovers. They are
defensively strong and have the capabilities to upset.
