Korea Republic have
kept ten players from their successful 2002 campaigns on home soil but
have a new coach at the reins, another Dutch man Dick Advocaat. They
secured their place in Germany with a second-placed finish in Group A of
the Asian Zone, their three wins, one draw and two defeats, behind Saudi
Arabia. Defender Kim Dong-jin is suspended for this match.
World Cup debutants
Togo pip continental giants Senegal, quarter-finalists at Korea/Japan
2002, to top Group 1 of the African preliminaries with seven wins, two
draws and a solitary defeat.
In 2002, unfashionable
South Korea,
emboldened by a passionate wave of home support reached the World Cup
semi-finals
after eliminating soccer
superpowers like Italy, Spain and Portugal
but will find it a tall order to repeat the same feat in foreign
territory. Togo were never the same side that saw them surprised many to
qualify for this edition of world cup, a disastrous African Nation cup
campaign followed and now, current pay dispute just before they get
their first kick of the tournament. They have now involved in a
merry-go-round of firing, appointing, dismissing and re-hiring coaches. That gives the Koreans a slight
advantage here but not worthy of any bet on a - 1/2 ball handicap.
