Coach Luis
Aragones has assembled a new-look Spanish side after the disappointment
of UEFA EURO 2004. He included a number of talented youngsters, notably
in the midfield area, while old-hand Raul continues to lead from the
front. Spain qualified via a playoff against Slovakia
racking up a
comprehensive 5-1 win in Madrid before playing out a 1-1 draw in
Bratislava
after laboured to second spot in Group 7. Captain Raul who
is struggling to regain his form after missing three months of the
season with a serious knee injury, looks likely to start on the
bench for this match. Spain, despite
one of the
powerhouses of European football,
have only progressed beyond the quarter-finals on one occasion when they
reached the last four in 1950.
Ukraine coach Oleg
Blokhin kept faith in his tried and trusted squad that performed so well
in the qualifiers where they were the first European side to secure
qualification for Germany after topping a tough Group 2 ahead of Turkey,
Denmark and newly crowned European champions Greece. Striker and captain
Andriy Shevchenko's fitness for Ukraine's World Cup opener remained in
doubt on Sunday even though he has trained on Sunday.
The Ukrainians impressed during their
qualifying campaign
pip newly crowned Euro 2004 champs Greece,
as well as Turkey and Denmark to reach their first World Cup finals.
Could be the "Dark Horse" of this finals. Spain are,
maybe,
on the longest unbeaten run of 22 games and no doubt as always started
as one of the favourites for this tournament. A history of World Cup
disappointments
plus the fact that
they only booked their place here via a
play-off with Slovakia after laboured to finish behind Serbia and
Montenegro in Group 7 do not really justify the favourite tag for this
edition of World Cup finals. They are notoriously poor starters at World
Cups, their 3-1 win over Slovenia in four years ago being their only
opening-match victory in nine attempts. This should be a very much close
affair as the 1/2 ball handicap indicated. A stale mate, probably a
score draw is likely the outcome.
