Debutants Trinidad
and Tobago pinned their hopes on their two ageing stars, Dwight Yorke
and Russell Latapy as well as experiences from Coventry City striker,
Stern John, Rangers centre-back Marvin Andrews and goalkeeper Shaka
Hislop. The tiny Caribbean nation qualified via a play-off against
Asia's fourth team, Bahrain after finishing behind the USA, Mexico and
Costa Rica. Central defender Marvin Andrews has been ruled out with a
knee injury.
Sweden finished
second in the group, though level on points with top place Croatia,
after having won eight of their ten games and earned them one of the
automatic qualifying places for best runners-up. The
Swedes' coach, Lars Lagerback included 13 players from the 2002
Korea/Japan, with the likes of the attacking trio of Freddie Ljungberg,
Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrik Larsson. They will be without first
choice goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson who suffered concussion when he was
felled by a shot during a training session on Wednesday and will be
replaced by an inexperienced goalkeeper, either John Alvbage or Rami
Shaaban.
England are the
most fancied side after tournament favourites, Brazil and there is no
reason why a much stronger Swedish side should not do well in this
group. They should qualify ahead of England and will be too strong for
today's opponents, Trinidad & Tobago.
