France have kept
faith in 11 of the side that crashed out in the first round in
Korea/Japan 2002,
several of them members of the 1998 FIFA World Cup-winning squad who,
maybe, are nearing the end of their careers. Internal squabbling
marred their run then and the 1998 champions were eliminated without a
win or a goal from the group stage. Liverpool striker Djibril
Cisse has been ruled out of the World Cup after fracturing his right
tibia in a friendly against China in St Etienne. French midfielder
Florent Malouda who missed training on Friday is a doubt.
Both were paired
together in Group 4 of the European Zone qualifying competition, where
they met twice, drawing on each occasion, and endured a dramatic qualifying campaign. The group was only decided
on the final matchday with France winning 4-0 against Cyprus to claim
top spot, two points ahead of the Swiss, who later secured their ticket
here after a play-off success over Turkey on away goals rule. Right back
Valon Behrami is unlikely to be fit as he struggles to shake off a groin
injury.
On a + 3/4 ball
handicap, I'll have to go for the Swiss.
Both nations competed in the same group during their qualifying campaign
and drawn their 2 encounters.
