Wigan manager Paul
Jewell is adamant he is not being disrespectful to the Carling Cup as he
again plans wholesale changes for the showdown with Newcastle. He had
all 11 players rested for the 1-0 second-round win over Bournemouth,
while nine changes were made for the 3-0 extra-time victory over Watford
in the third round. Goalkeeper Mike Pollitt definitely starts as John
Filan has a knee injury, but the 10 outfield players that faced Spurs in
a 2-1 defeat on Saturday are all likely to be rested.
Michael Owen is
not expected to feature for Newcastle in their Carling Cup clash with Wigan
on Wednesday after missing both games since the last international
break. He has failed to shake off the groin injury and will not be
risked at the JJB Stadium. Full-back Celestine Babayaro is also
sidelined by a similar injury, while Kieron Dyer (illness), Stephen Carr
(hernia), Steven Taylor (shoulder) and Craig Moore (hamstring) remain on
the casualty list.
