Ireland coach
Steve Staunton, under pressure to quit following his side's 5-2
defeat to Cyprus on Saturday, faces yet more difficulties ahead
of today's home game against the Czech Republic with fresh
injury worries. Celtic's Aiden McGeady who injured an ankle in
training on Tuesday is the latest injury concern. If he is ruled
out, he would be the 14th Irish player sidelined for the Group D
Euro 2008 qualifier. Staunton is already without stand-in
Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, stand in for the
injured Shay Given and Manchester City midfielder Stephen
Ireland after they picked up injuries in the Cyprus game.
Reading striker Kevin Doyle, who missed Saturday's match with an
ankle injury, has also returned to his club. Richard Dunne is
suspended after being sent off in Nicosia. He has called up
Everton midfielder Lee Carsley who retired from international
football more than two years ago. Ireland need a win on
Wednesday to keep alive their already slim hopes of qualifying
for the finals in 2008 after two defeats in their opening two
matches.
Czech
Republic coach Karel Brueckner called up uncapped Slovan Liberec
goalkeeper Marek Cech, who will serve as a backup to first
choice Petr Cech. Coach Karel Brueckner added defensive
midfielder Martin Abraham and winger Zdenek Pospech to his squad
on Tuesday for Euro 2008 qualifiers against San Marino and
Ireland later this month. Uncapped Abraham, 28, replaces Tomas
Galasek from Nuremberg, who has a knee injury. Pospech takes the
place of Rangers midfielder Libor Sionko, who pulled a thigh
muscle a 1-0 victory over Aberdeen on Sunday. Midfielder Tomas
Sivok of Sparta Prague, who needs surgery to repair an injured
abdominal muscle, will also miss the two qualifiers, but no
replacement has been announced.
