Chelsea left-back Wayne Bridge will return to the squad and play some part against Charlton in the Carling Cup third round at Stamford Bridge. He was out after suffered a double fracture of his ankle in a collision with Alan Shearer during Chelsea's FA Cup sixth round defeat at Newcastle in February. Chelsea will make a number of changes, Carlo Cudicini replacing Petr Cech in goal and a possible start for England Under-21 international Carlton Cole in attack. Even they make a wholesome change, they have enough talent at their disposal to put up a very strong squad. Chelsea ended Charlton's 100% start to the new campaign with a 2-0 win at The Valley in September, before eventually seeing their own impressive run end following a surprise 1-1 draw at struggling Everton on Sunday.

Alan Curbishley side is the closest challengers to the Barclays Premiership leaders Chelsea, nine points adrift, albeit with a game in hand. On-loan Chelsea midfielder Alexei Smertin is unavailable under the terms of the deal otherwise Curbishley intends not to alter a winning side. The Addicks won all their away games so far this season. However, Charlton's record in cup competitions in recent years has been hugely disappointing. Since Curbishley took charge in 1991, Charlton have been embarrassed by a number of minnows - including Gillingham, Blackpool, Oxford and Walsall - and had to come from behind to see off the challenge of League One Hartlepool at home in the previous round.
